Why Gaskets are Important

Blowing a gasket can be a large cause of breakdowns, and sadly most people don’t really understand what they are or why this happens. That’s nothing to be ashamed of, and we’re going to change this right now.

Gaskets keep air and liquids where they belong by providing an impassible seal. They’re made of flexible metal – often copper and steel, with a nice, rubbery coating. Of the many, the oil pan (keeping oil in where the crankshaft needs it), intake/exhaust manifold (keeping a constant temperature and air where it needs to be) and the cylinder heads (padding the gap between the engine block and them).

The easiest way to spot failures is to look for deposit buildups, gaps appearing or stiffening or cracking gaskets.

You can put this problem off if you change your oil and engine fluids often and be aware of how hot your engine runs.
